Movie Guide Home > Classic Horror Movies >
'The Shining' Review and Movie Quotes

Main Points From This
Excellent Review:

The Shining — Rated: R

• Lots of Creepy Children!

• Lots of Irresponsible Parenting..... Jack Nicholson ain't gonna win any Father of the Year or Husband of the Year Awards!

• Lots of Liquor Drinking and Axe Swinging!

• Lots of Ghosts that are British and/or Queer!

• A Potential Sex Scene with a Hot Naked Chick.....that you'll be glad DIDN'T HAPPEN! Danny prefers Babes that are NOT Dead, Thank You Very Much!

• Ignore what Stephen King said about this movie.....Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining Kicks Ass!

Running Time: 142 Minutes

The Shining is one of the Best Horror Movies Ever Made!

Danny is very tempted to say it's DEFINITELY the Best Horror Movie Ever Made in the History of the World!

But I'm pretty sure I'll get hundreds of hate e-mails from Horror Geeks; giving me hundreds of examples of why The Shining is NOT The Best Horror Movie Ever Made!

Horror Movie Fans are a peculiar people:

• Some of them consider a great Horror Movie to be just Over-the-top Gore.....and little else (Ex. Hostel, Cannibal Holocaust, Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes)

• Some of them like the creepy ghost stories that provide mild chills (Ex. The Others, The Haunted)

• Some of them like Monsters, Monsters, Monsters (Ex. Creepshow, The Thing, The Fog, The Evil Dead)

• And some of them don't care about anything else except the Gratuitous Sex, Nudity and Slashing of Pretty Girls (Ex. Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween)

That first group (Over-the-Top Gore) definitely has some serious issues!

Danny should know.....He has been a Lifelong Member of that group of Perverted Weirdos!

Now I have nothing against Horror Movies whose goal is simply to Disgust You!

Some of them are Sick, Disturbing and Depraved.....which is exactly what I wanted when I went to see them.

"Danny Believes In
Quality Family Time"

Sometimes Danny just enjoys to gather the rest of his family around the Big Screen TV.....and watch Vicious Violence and Senseless Sex!

Now that's Danny's idea of spending Wholesome Quality Time with the Family!

When you rent a movie called I Spit On Your Grave.....you're not expecting to see a classic film like Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane or The Sound of Music!

But The Shining is a Horror Movie that takes itself very seriously.....as if Director Stanley Kubrick knew ahead of time that this movie would be THE Horror Movie that Future Horror Movies would be compared to.

It doesn't resort to Generic Shocks.....the kind that makes most Horror Movies Predictable!

The Shining is a Horror Movie of the Highest Quality.....as you would expect from a Stanley Kubrick Flick!

That's the reason why the Horror Genre isn't taken seriously as an art form.....because many of them do not have quality film-making in mind.

They were made to sell it's "Shock Value" and make a quick buck.

Afterwards, they are usually forgotten.....as you would expect from a Low-Quality Movie!

Many of Studios who finance them know this from the get go.....which is why they're made on Shoe-string Budgets with either Has-Been or No-Name actors and actresses.

But that's not the way that Stanley Kubrick did things.

He was a stickler for Preparation and Quality (just like Danny himself) and that kind of effort shows in his movies.

The Shining is a favorite on edited Network TV because not much has to be taken out of it to be approved by the censors for the Network TV audiences.

Now try to imagine trying to show a Sex and Gore Fest like Hostel or Cannibal Holocaust on Edited Network TV......after the editing is done, nothing will be left except the Opening and Closing Credits!

I remember when the old HBO show Tales from the Crypt was shown on late night network TV.....all the best parts were missing cause of those Pussy Network Censors!

But not everyone liked the way that Stanley Kubrick did things.

When I first heard about Stephen King's feelings toward this movie, I couldn't believe it.....

"Stephen King Has Always
Hated This Movie"

The Shining — Written by Stephen KingCopyright © 1977 Doubleday Publishing,
All Rights Reserved

The Shining is based on the famous Stephen King novel.

But while I read the Stephen King novel only once many years ago, I've seen The Shining DOZENS of Times!

Not that the Book was Bad.....it was actually Pretty Good!

Danny just simply prefers watching the movie more.....A Lot More!

Sorry, Mr. King.....It's True!

Stephen King was never happy with how Stanley Kubrick adapted his novel to film.

Stephen King really spoke out Against the movie for a long time.....even though Nobody Listened!

Although I don't think King can be too upset since he's made "Buckets Of Money" because of the popularity of Stanley Kubrick's vision of The Shining.

Stephen King was allowed to make a Mini-Series (new window) back in 1997 which was more faithful to his novel.

Like the the novel, I saw the mini-series once.....and never again.

When you judge the mini-series on it's own merits, it wasn't Half Bad. Which also means that it was just barely Half Good!

It's totally impossible to NOT compare the mini-series to the movie. The popularity of the Movie with the Fans is impossible to Defeat!

If Danny, or anyone else with half-a-brain, has to choose between spending their valuable time watching the movie version of The Shining or watching the mini-series version of The Shining.....the movie version will win Every Single Time!

You know, every once in a while.....

"Stephen King Speaks Or Writes
Without Thinking First"

Back in 1990, Stephen King released his Un-Edited Version of one of his Earlier Novels from 1978 — The Stand!

At the beginning of this Massive Book, he wrote a few words about the Many Advantages People who read Fiction Books have over those People who only watch Movie Adaptations of Fiction Books.

The Shining — Written by Stephen King

Copyright © 1978 Doubleday Publishing,
All Rights Reserved

King also took the opportunity to take a little stab at Jack Nicholson and Kubrick's Version of The Shining.

But King also wrote about the fact that if you watch a Movie Adaptation before Reading the Original Book.....you'll be picturing the Movie in your Visualization as you read the book.

King was saying that each reader should have their own unique mental picture while they're Reading Fiction.....but a Movie Adaptation will Rob the Reader of this.

As a Longtime Fiction Reader, Danny Completely Agrees!

If I were ever to read The Shining again, I couldn't picture anyone else except Jack Nicholson playing the Insane Dad!

Of course, this hasn't stopped Stephen King from having almost FORTY different Feature Films, TV Movies and TV Miniseries made from his stories.

Tons of Cold Hard Cash has a way of Ruining the High Ideals of Anyone .....including Stephen King!

Hey.....I don't hold it against Stephen King to want to make TONS OF MONEY!

After all.....this is the United States of America!

Where everybody has the Right to Make as much Money as they can!

DANNY LOVES CAPITALISM!

But sometimes Stephen King can get a little "Full of Himself".....and he sometimes forgets to "Practice what he Preaches!"

So, when it's all said and done, it's up to the Individual to choose.

Re-live The Shining by reading the Novel or by watching the Movie.

"Some Friendly Advice....."

Danny thinks it's best that you forget that the Mini-Series ever existed.....just like everyone else has!

The plot of The Shining shouldn't be a secret to anybody by now!

The Shining was released Twenty-Eight Years Ago (1980).....plenty of time for all of your Friends and Family to Spoil the movie for you if you haven't seen it already!

The Torrence Family spends a Brutal Colorado Winter in a Huge Haunted Hotel by themselves.

The Hotel is called — The Overlook Hotel!

The Dad (played by Jack Nicholson) slowly starts to lose his mind!

The Son (played by Danny Lloyd) slowly starts to lose his mind!

And The Mom (played by Shelley "Olive Oyl" Duvall) cries a lot and is basically Clueless through most of the movie!

As a matter of fact.....

"Danny Remembers The First Time
He Saw This Movie"

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

My memory is a little foggy as to when I actually saw The Shining for the first time.

I may have seen The Shining at the old Drive-In movie theater that my parents used to go to in Newark, NJ.....but I'm not 100% sure of that since I was only 4 years old at the time.

But I do remember the first time I saw it on Cable TV.

Little Danny was watching a Horror "Clip-Show" Documentary way, way back in 1984 or '85.

It was called Terror in the Aisles (new window).....and it was narrated by

• Nancy Allen — Carrie and Dressed to Kill

And

• Donald Pleasence — Halloween, Escape from New York and You Only Live Twice

There was no plot in Terror in the Aisles.

It was just Allen and Pleasence narrating the best scenes of Past Horror Movies that were made before 1984.....this "Documentary" was just cashing in on the successes of other Horror Movies.

And it was in Terror in the Aisles that Little Danny watched a Frightening Sequence that just seem to Hypnotize him!

Of course, Danny is referring to the scene were Wendy discovers that Jack has gone off "The Deep End!"

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

This occurs when Wendy sees the insane rambling that Jack's been typing the entire time they've been trapped at The Overlook Hotel.

"All Work And No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy."

Wendy discovers that Jack has done nothing but type out this one sentence THOUSANDS OF TIMES!

Then it gets even better when Jack slowly (very slowly) stalks after Wendy across the huge spacious room and up the stairs.....Jack is like a Predator whose in the midst of cornering his Dinner!

Even though Wendy is armed with a Baseball bat, she's constantly backing away from Jack who is pursuing her, unarmed.

Every Single Time I watch The Shining, I look forward to this scene!

I look forward to it the same way I look forward to the scene in Goodfellas when Joe Pesci beats this Mob Guy's skull in with his Gun!

It's a Classic, Timeless scene that never, ever gets Old!

The Shining is just another example of the how Great Stanley Kubrick was at his Job.

This is because there are.....

"Many Unforgettable Scenes In
This Movie"

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

Stanley Kubrick's entire movie career can be summarized by saying that his movies always seem to have Timeless Scenes that never get old:

Spartacus: "I Am Spartacus", "I Am Spartacus", "I Am Spartacus"

Dr. Strangelove: The Pilot riding piggy-back on the Nuclear Bomb yelling "Yee-Haw"

2001 — A Space Odyssey: Too many to count.....but my favorite is the "Hippie" psychedelic journey beyond Infinity.

Watching this scene so many times has throughly prepared Danny if he ever decides to be a Drugged Out Hobo, living under a Bridge and Eating out of Garbage Cans!

A Clockwork Orange: Malcolm McDowell having his eyes forced open to watch endless hours of Ultra-Violence and Rape!

Full Metal Jacket: The Blanket Party — A bunch of Half-Naked Dudes in their PJ's beating the Shit out of another Half-Naked Dude in his PJ!

Eyes Wide Shut: The Kinky Orgy Scene — also known as Hieros Gamos (new window)

Kubrick had this uncanny ability to create scenes that would be remembered forever!

This ability is the Main Reason why Danny is a Huge Fan of Movie Directors like:

• Stanley Kubrick

• Martin Scorsese

• Alfred Hitchcock

• Steven Spielberg

• Clint Eastwood

• James Cameron

• David Fincher

• Ridley Scott

• The Coen Brothers

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

Another famous scene that's a fan favorite are The Twin Girls that haunt Little Danny as he rides his Little Toy Bike in the Halls!

The scene is Great because the camera follows Danny has he rides his bike .....you see the Hallway from His Point-of-View.

We spot the Twin Girls at the same moment that the kid spots the Twin Girls!

"Come Play with us Danny. Forever. And Ever. And Ever."

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

And what about Wendy finally realizing that The Overlook Hotel is haunted by the spirits of an old 4th of July Masquerade Party.

The scene with the elevator door opening and spilling out an ocean of blood .....AWESOME!

What kind of mind can come up with an idea like that?

To film an Avalanche of Blood!

And remember, The Shining came out in 1980.

So there were no Fancy, Artificial, Computer-generated Special Effects used at all!

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

And what about Danny being chased by Jack through the Hedge Maze.....and the idea that Danny comes up with to save himself.

The Hedge Maze does NOT exist in the original Stephen King novel at all. In the novel, the Hedge Trees have been pruned into the shape of Animals and the Animals come to Life.

This would have been impossible to Film back in 1980.....so Stanley Kubrick created the Idea of the Hedge Maze!

And who can Forget these Two Phrases:

"REDRUM! REDRUM! REDRUM!"

and

"HERE'S JOHNNY!"

And don't forget the overall Atmosphere of the Hotel itself.....including Background Music and Isolated Locations!

It's just Jack, Wendy and Danny in the Evil Hotel.....that's it!

The movies Alien and Aliens used the same Isolated and Loneliness Atmospheres to great effect!

If you watch enough Stanley Kubrick Movies, you come to realize that.....

"Stanley Kubrick Knew What He Was Doing.....He Was A Master Film Maker"

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

The Shining, like most Stanley Kubrick Movies, does not give you all of the answers!

The Shining seems to be even scarier because the movie does not Spell out everything for you.....including the motives of the Ghosts.

Kubrick movies requires thought on the part of the viewer.....you have to try to figure out what the movie is about and what the movie is trying to say.

"The Reason Why Some People Don't Like Stanley Kubrick Movies"

Kubrick made movies that forced you to THINK for yourself to try to understand what's happening.

Some people don't know how to think for themselves.....they prefer movies where every detail is laid out for themselves in easily digestive portions.

Some people don't like to be challenged to figure things out cause they simply don't know how to used that huge lump of Grey Mass inside of their skull.

I think this is why many of Kubrick's movies didn't get great reviews initially.....because most Movie Critics ain't too bright either!

Many of Kubrick's movies are open to different interpretations.

Long Discussions and Conversations usually take place where people go over what they think the movie was about.....the longer people discuss a movie, the longer that movie is remembered!

I'm sure that Kubrick knew this would happen.....and wanted it to happen this way.

You see, most movies give you a simple story.....with simple characters .....and with simple conclusions.

These movies are usually seen once or twice.....and then forgotten!

But those few movies that do NOT make it Easy for you, that challenges you and forces you to think.....well, those movies are usually remembered and honored as The Great Ones!

That's how you Break Away from the "Mediocre Pack" and define yourself and your work.....whether it be in Movies, Books, Paintings, Music or any other Business.

Anything that's Great always seem to stand up against The Test of Time.

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

I think Kubrick understood that his movies would hold up over the Test of Time.....but he did have to sacrifice Huge amounts of Money in order to do this.

Kubrick could have made huge amounts of money had he just stuck to making Dumb Movies or Summer Blockbuster Movies that were guaranteed to bring in Huge Ticket Sales.

But there is a catch.

While these Movies make a ton of movie for the very short period of time they're remembered.....they're eventually forgotten because there was nothing Unique or Memorable about them to begin with.

Almost all of Kubrick's movies made Modest Revenues at the Box Office .....but he never made any Huge Blockbusters along the lines of Jaws or Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Kubrick definitely had the Skill to do this if he wanted.....but that wasn't the kind of Legacy he wanted to leave behind.

Kubrick always made sure to keep the Budgets of his movies under control. So, no matter how small the Box Office numbers were, they were still Profitable!

And as long as your movies turn in a profit.....a movie studio will trust you and your Artistic Expressions!

Question:

How many Movies can you think of that can challenge you the way that The Shining and other Kubrick movies can?

Danny likes to think of Kubrick movies like a Big Jigsaw Puzzle or a Rubex Cube.

Half the fun is trying to figure it out FOR YOURSELF!

When a Movie just Gives you all of the Answers, Half the fun is taken away from you!

But that's just Danny.....I'm sure there are lots of people who don't want to be Challenged and want everything made easy for them!

Those people have No Idea that they're being Short-Changed!

They're being Short-Changed by Movie Studios who are Convinced that they are too Fuckin' Dumb to figure things out for themselves!

And most of the times.....IT'S TRUE!

Read the next section for examples of the Challenges that Kubrick loved to give his audiences.....

Danny's Insane Thoughts
And Observations —

"The Hidden Messages In The Shining"

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

Even though Kubrick Movies don't give you all of the Answers.....they do give you Plenty of Clues to piece things together for yourself!

If you watch The Shining enough times you'll see those Clues.....if you're paying attention.

Here are some of them and what Danny thinks their possible meanings could be:

The Color Red — the color of Blood, possibly symbolizing Insanity or
Violent Death.....REDRUM!

The Color Gold — possibly symbolizing the Riches obtained by the United States as it expanded it's influence into the "then" untapped Western Half of the country in the 19th Century.

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

Mirrors — Whenever Jack is interacting with a "Ghost", there is a Mirror nearby.

Could this mean that Jack is really talking to himself?

That these "Ghosts" are just reflections of Jack's own Dark Nature that he isn't even aware of?

One scene that stands out is when Jack wanders into The Gold Room and speaks to a Ghost Bartender.....there is a Huge Mirror behind the bar.

Even though there isn't any Real Booze at the Bar.....Jack manages to get drunk anyway from Booze that the Ghost Bartender gives him.

Did Jack get drunk on Real Booze or Imaginary Booze?

Did Jack even get drunk at all.....or is he just "Acting Drunk" because he really believes that he drank Real Booze?

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

Bathrooms — The bathroom is usually the one place that an individual is most vulnerable.

If somebody wanted to attack you, the best place to do it is in the bathroom when your defenses are down.....you're literally caught with your "Pants Down"!

The perfect example is the Famous Shower Murder Scene from Psycho!

In The Shining:

1) Jack interacts with a Young Naked Chick in a Bathroom.....he gets a Huge Shock when he looks at the Big Mirror in that Bathroom!

2) Jack is influenced by a Ghost of a Past Caretaker in another Bathroom.....this bathroom is Painted Red!

3) Wendy and Danny hide in a Bathroom from a Murderous Jack!

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

Indian Symbols — the movie mentions that The Overlook Hotel was built over an Indian Burial site. There are many decorations and symbols of Indian Culture seen all over the Hotel.

Could this mean that the Murders that took place at The Overlook Hotel over the years actually started with the Theft and Desecration of an Indian Burial Site?

I found this article written by Bill Blakemore for the San Francisco Chronicle way back in July 29, 1987.

Blakemore writes about what he believes Stanley Kubrick was "Indirectly" telling the movie audience in regards to Indians and The Overlook Hotel.

Read it for yourself at The Kubrick Site! (new window)

The conquering of the American Indians is part of American History. If you're a student of American History, you are familiar with this.

I think many American viewers recognized the Indian Symbols throughout The Shining.....but never thought whether or not it had any significance to the Horrors going on at The Overlook Hotel.

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

The "Overlook" Hotel — Even the name of the Hotel is an indication of what's going on.

Many murders have occurred at The Overlook Hotel.....and yet the Hotel was never shut down.

The murders of guests were "Overlooked."

The murder of Indians and desecration of their burial ground was "Overlooked."

The Hotel is a "Mirror" of man's ability to "Overlook" murder and horror when it is convenient.

I lived near New York City and other urban areas for many years. And you do learn how to "Overlook" the bad things going on all around you.

Even if you hear about a Horrible Crime on the news.....you just put it out of your mind. You have to "Overlook" them.....otherwise, you'll be too afraid to live your life.

Question:

But what are the Consequences for
Overlooking Horrible Things for too long?

Eventually, you get to a point where you cannot Overlook them anymore.

Like Urban Cities that have High Crime Rates.....if the problems hadn't been Overlooked for so long, the Crime Statistics would never have gotten so Out of Control.

I think that Wendy Overlooked what was happening to her family through most of the Movie.....Jack turning Insane and Danny's imaginary friend, Tony.

But at the end of The Shining, she was unable to Overlook them anymore.

And so she started to see the same Ghosts that Jack and Danny were seeing from the beginning.

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

The Hedge Maze — How many of you are familiar with Greek Mythology?

Specifically, The Labyrinth of Crete and The Minotaur!

According to Greek Myth, The Labyrinth (new window) was so complex in its design that once a person was incarcerated there it was impossible for them to find their way out again.

They would then become prey for the Minotaur (new window) — a half-man, half-bull that lived in the Labyrinth.

At the end of The Shining, when Jack chases Danny into the Hedge Maze .....Jack takes on the personality of The Minotaur; looking to devour his prey that is running around in the maze!

While The Hedge Maze itself represents the Greek Labyrinth.....doesn't the entire setting of The Overlook Hotel also represent a Labyrinth.

The Overlook Hotel is so huge that it's easy for a person to get lost in it .....Wendy made this observation at the beginning of The Shining!

In that sense, The Ghosts haunting The Overlook Hotel also represent The Minotaur because they are trying to devour the people who stay in it.

In the course of my Preparation for this Movie Review, I stumbled upon some interesting info.....

"Some Behind-The-Scenes Trivia
From The Shining"

The Shining — Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

• Outtakes of the shots of the Volkswagen traveling towards the Overlook at the start of The Shining were plundered by Ridley Scott (with Stanley Kubrick's permission) for the "Happy Ending" in the original release of Blade Runner (1982).

The Shining was voted the 9th Scariest Film of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

• The movie's line "Here's Johnny!" was voted as the #68 movie quote by the American Film Institute (out of 100).

• The movie's line "Here's Johnny!" was voted as the #36 of "The 100 Greatest Movie Lines" by Premiere in 2007.

• All of the interior rooms of The Overlook Hotel were filmed at Elstree Studios in England, including The Colorado Lounge, where Jack does his typing.

Because of the intense heat generated from the lighting used to recreate window sunlight, the lounge set caught fire.

Fortunately all of the scenes had been completed there, so the set was rebuilt with a higher ceiling, and the same area was eventually used by Steven Spielberg as the snake-filled "Well of the Souls" tomb in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

• The former caretaker of the Overlook Hotel has two different names — Charles Grady and Delbert Grady — because he's supposed to be two different people.

Charles is the caretaker who murdered his wife and daughters in the winter of 1970, and Delbert is the butler of the Overlook Hotel at the 4th of July party in 1921 (which Jack was also at).

This is a reference to the original book (the former caretaker's name didn't change like it did in the movie, but he was at the hotel in two different time periods- once at a masquerade ball in 1945 and again as the caretaker in 1970.)

The use of two different names in the movie version of The Shining is simply to show that Grady has been at The Overlook Hotel twice, just like Jack.

Danny's Top 5 Cool Movie Quotes!

Copyright © 1980 Warner Bros, All Rights Reserved

"The Shining" Cool Movie Quote — No. 1

Wendy Torrance: Hey. Wasn't it around here that the Donner Party got snowbound?

Jack Torrance: I think that was farther west in the Sierras.

Wendy Torrance: Oh.

Danny Torrance: What was the Donner Party?

Jack Torrance: They were a party of settlers in covered-wagon times. They got snowbound one winter in the mountains. They had to resort to cannibalism in order to stay alive.

Danny Torrance: You mean they ate each other up?

Jack Torrance: They had to, in order to survive.

Wendy Torrance: Jack...

Danny Torrance: Don't worry, Mom. I know all about cannibalism. I saw it on TV.

Jack Torrance: See, it's OK. He saw it on the television.

"The Shining" Cool Movie Quote — No. 2

Jack Torrance: Wendy, let me explain something to you. Whenever you come in here and interrupt me, you're breaking my concentration. You're distracting me. And it will then take me time to get back to where I was. You understand?

Wendy Torrance: Yeah.

Jack Torrance: Now, we're going to make a new rule. When you come in here and you hear me typing.....[types].....or whether you DON'T hear me typing, or whatever the FUCK you hear me doing; when I'm in here, it means that I am working, THAT means don't come in. Now, do you think you can handle that?

Wendy Torrance: Yeah.

Jack Torrance: Good. Now why don't you start right now and get the fuck out of here? Hm?

"The Shining" Cool Movie Quote — No. 3

Delbert Grady: Did you know, Mr. Torrance, that your son is attempting to bring an outside party into this situation? Did you know that?

Jack Torrance: No.

Delbert Grady: He is, Mr. Torrance.

Jack Torrance: Who?

Delbert Grady: A nigger.

Jack Torrance: A nigger?

Delbert Grady: A nigger cook.

Jack Torrance: How?

Delbert Grady: Your son has a very great talent. I don't think you are aware how great it is. That he is attempting to use that very talent against your will.

Jack Torrance: He is a very willful boy.

Delbert Grady: Indeed he is, Mr. Torrance. A very willful boy. A rather naughty boy, if I may be so bold, sir.

Jack Torrance: It's his mother. She, uh, interferes.

Delbert Grady: Perhaps they need a good talking to, if you don't mind my saying so. Perhaps a bit more. My girls, sir, they didn't care for the Overlook at first. One of them actually stole a pack of matches, and tried to burn it down. But I "corrected" them sir. And when my wife tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I "corrected" her.

"The Shining" Cool Movie Quote — No. 4

Dick Hallorann: I can remember when I was a little boy. My grandmother and I could hold conversations entirely without ever opening our mouths. She called it "shining." And for a long time, I thought it was just the two of us that had the shine to us. Just like you probably thought you was the only one. But there are other folks, though mostly they don't know it, or don't believe it. How long have you been able to do it?... Why don't you want to talk about it?

Danny Torrance: I'm not supposed to.

Dick Hallorann: Who said you ain't supposed to?

Danny Torrance: Tony.

Dick Hallorann: Who's Tony?

Danny Torrance: Tony is a little boy that lives in my mouth.

Dick Hallorann: Is Tony the one that tells you things?

Danny Torrance: Yes.

Dick Hallorann: How does he tell you things?

Danny Torrance: It's like I go to sleep, and he shows me things. But when I wake up, I can't remember everything.

Dick Hallorann: Does your Mom and Dad know about Tony?

Danny Torrance: Yes.

Dick Hallorann: Do they know he tells you things?

Danny Torrance: No. Tony told me never to tell 'em.

Dick Hallorann: Has Tony ever told you anything about this place? About the Overlook Hotel?

Danny Torrance: I don't know.

Dick Hallorann: Now think real hard now. Think.

Danny Torrance: Maybe he showed me something.

Dick Hallorann: Try to think of what it was.

Danny Torrance: Mr. Hallorann, are you scared of this place?

Dick Hallorann: No. Scared - there's nothin' here. It's just that, you know, some places are like people. Some "shine" and some don't. I guess you could say the Overlook Hotel here has somethin' almost like "shining."

Danny Torrance: Is there something bad here?

Dick Hallorann: Well, you know, Doc, when something happens, you can leave a trace of itself behind. Say like, if someone burns toast. Well, maybe things that happen leave other kinds of traces behind. Not things that anyone can notice, but things that people who "shine" can see. Just like they can see things that haven't happened yet. Well, sometimes they can see things that happened a long time ago. I think a lot of things happened right here in this particular hotel over the years. And not all of 'em was good.

Danny Torrance: What about Room 237?

Dick Hallorann: Room 237?

Danny Torrance: You're scared of Room 237, ain't ya?

Dick Hallorann: No I ain't.

Danny Torrance: Mr. Hallorann. What is in Room 237?

Dick Hallorann: Nothin'. There ain't nothin' in Room 237. But you ain't got no business goin' in there anyway. So stay out. You understand? Stay out.

"The Shining" Cool Movie Quote — No. 5

Wendy Torrance: [crying] Stay away from me.

Jack Torrance: Why?

Wendy Torrance: I just wanna get back to my room!

Jack Torrance: Why?

Wendy Torrance: Well, I'm very confused, and I just need time to think things over!

Jack Torrance: You've had your whole FUCKING LIFE to think things over, what's a few more minutes gonna do you now?

Wendy Torrance: Stay away from me. [swings baseball bat]

Jack Torrance: Wendy.

Wendy Torrance: Stay away.

Jack Torrance: Darling. Light, of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in. Ha, ha.
