Danny's Feelings About The Departed:
Lies. Betrayal. Sacrifice. How far will you take it?

The Departed is vintage Martin Scorsese!Movies like The Departed are the reason why Danny and so many others grew up to admire Martin Scorsese movies! Not that his less violent movies aren't good too: • The Aviator • The King of Comedy • After Hours • The Color of Money • The Last Temptation of Christ But his Intense, Violent Movies are the ones I love the most:
• Mean Streets • Taxi Driver • Raging Bull • The King of Comedy • Goodfellas • Cape Fear • Casino • Bringing Out the Dead • Gangs of New York.....and now....The Departed
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights ReservedThe Departed FINALLY gave Martin Scorsese the Best Director and Best Picture Awards that have eluded his movies for so long. Before The Departed, Martin Scorsese movies had been Nominated for Best Director and Best Picture a total of Five Ttimes.....and lost a total of Five Times! • Taxi Driver (1976) • Raging Bull (1980) • Goodfellas (1990) • Gangs of New York (2002) • The Aviator (2004) I normally hate when Actors and/or Directors get awards for Mediocre work. Especially when it's done to make up for the awards that were denied to them for much better work that they did in the past.....but, in the case of The Departed, the Best Picture and Best Director awards are well deserved. This movie is an adaption of an Hong Kong Gangster movie called Infernal Affairs from 2002.....I never saw it before but I'm planning to.
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights ReservedThe story is filled with characters who are Professional Liars. Almost every one of them live in a huge web of lies and they are constantly having to avoid being detected by those they are lying to. I can only imagine how convoluted the screenplay must of been to fit so many different characters and deceptions into one movie. That's probably the reason why the original Infernal Affairs was followed by two sequals. But only Martin Scorsese could have made such a confusing screenplay into a coherent movie. The Departed involves major Double Crosses within the Irish Mafia and within the Massachusetts State Police.
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights ReservedMob Boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) plants Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) into the Massachusetts State Police as spy. Costello has supported Sullivan since he was a kid. Costello paid for his schooling and made him join the Police Department for the purpose of giving Costello a set of eyes from within. At the same time, Captain Oliver Queenan (Martin Sheen) and his cynical second in command, Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam (Mark Wahlberg), have a similar plan. They want to take a new cadet named Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and have him work his way into Frank Costello's gang to spy on him. They fabricate a story of how Billy Costigan was kicked out of the Police Department and was sent up to Prison afterwards.
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights ReservedColin Sullivan has a easier time earning the trust of the Massachusetts Police "Higher-ups". They're a bunch of Cop "Politicians" who known whose ass to kiss to gain the positions with the most attention and prestige. Sulliven is so good at lying and sucking up that he gets into the elite Special Investigations Unit. The unit is run by Captain Ellerby (Alec Baldwin) who completely trusts Sullivan. But Billy Costigan has more work to do to earn the trust of men who know that they can't afford to trust too many people. Frank Costello knows this most of all. Costello is a man who "keeps his own counsel" and knows the importance of keeping your mouth shut. So Costigan has to tread very lightly and not asktoo many questions....or he'll find himself hanging from a meat hook. This means that Costigan has to commit many violent crimes himself in order to win the approval and trust of Costello and his gang.....similar situation for Johnny Depp's character in the 1997 movie Donnie Brasco.
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights ReservedBoth Costigan and Sullivan can never get too comfortable in their "Phony Lives" because their superiors are constantly "Chewing on their Ass" for more information about their targets.
But then the Fuckin' Roof caves in! Costello finds out that there's a Fuckin' Cheese-Eating Rat in his gang put their by the Police....but he doesn't know who it is.
And the Police find out there's a Fuckin' Rat Prick in their ranks that was put there by Costello....but they don't know who. So now both sides are trying to flush out the rat in their group: Costigan has to keep Sullivan from discovering who he is while maintaining the illusion of loyalty with Costello.....and Sullivan has to keep Costigan from discovering who he is while maintaining the illusion of loyalty with his Cop Superiors! And, at the same time, Costigan is trying to find out who the Rat is in the Police to protect his own identity.....and Sullivan is doing the same!
Confused yet? If you are, it's because Danny tried to summarize a 150 minute movie into a few short paragraphs. Trust me, The Departed takes plenty of time to make the story line less confusing for the viewer....while at the same time, not patronizing the viewer. Danny hates movies that try to Over-Simplified the story because the film makers don't think that I'll be able understand and follow the story.
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights ReservedALL of the actors do an Outstanding Job in The Departed. • Jack Nicholson makes a very charismatic and scary mob boss. This guy is ruthless and will even kill his closest associates to keep his empire going.
• Leonardo DiCaprio does his best acting performance ever, in Danny's opinion.
The Departed is Martin Scorsese's third straight movie with Di"Craprio" as the lead actor. The last two were The Aviator and Gangs of New York....both of which are also excellent movies too.
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights Reserved • Matt Damon is great as a Mob Owed Police Officer.
His "Dual-Identity" character is similar to his role in The Talented Mr. Ripley back in 1999. This Sullivan guy is trapped in a huge web of lies....I'm amazed how he's able to manage all of the lies without slipping. I personally know people like this....they are very, very good at lying and never getting caught. They're especially good at mixing the Truth in with the Lies.....Danny hasn't completely Mastered this Important Skill yet but he's getting better at it. However, It does become more complicated for the Sullivan to keep the lies going when he starts dating a Police Psychiatrist....the same Psychiatrist that Costigan is having sex with during his off hours. • Martin Sheen and Mark Wahlberg are very good in their supporting roles as Costigan's "Handlers."
Especially Wahlberg.....he acts like such an asshole in this movie. He's Great! • Alec Baldwin is also very good as the Police Captain/Politician whose completely duped by Sullivan.
But the No. 1 reason to watch The Departed is to witness one of the most Shocking, Violent endings to a movie Danny has ever seen!
I guarantee that the ending will will "Blow Your Mind" the way it "Blew Danny's Mind!!!!"

Danny's Top 5 Cool Movie Quotes!
Copyright © 2006 Warner Bros., All Rights Reserved Cool Movie Quote — No. 1
Billy Costigan: Frank, how many of these guys have been with you long enough to be disgruntled, huh? Think about it. You don't pay much, you know. It's almost a fuckin' feudal enterprise. The question is, and this is the only question, who thinks that they can do what you do better than you? Frank Costello: The only one that can do what I do is me. Lot of people had to die for me to be me. You wanna be me? Billy Costigan: I probably could be you, yeah. Yeah, I know that much. But I don't wanna be you, Frank. I don't wanna be you Frank Costello: Heavy lies the crown... sort of thing.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 2 Frank Costello: Sweetheart, you're giving me a hard-on. Gwen: Are you sure it's me? Not all that talk about whiffing and crawling up asses? Frank Costello: Watch your fuckin' mouth! Gwen: No, you watch it. Let me straighten you out.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 3 Ellerby: Go fuck yourself. Dignam: I'm tired from fucking your wife. Ellerby: How is your mother? Dignam: Good, she's tired from fucking my father.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 4 Frank Costello: [after talking to Madolyn on the phone] Was that that shrink cunt that answered the phone? Colin Sullivan: Remember I told you that we were gonna... she was gonna move in? Frank Costello: Yeah. Colin Sullivan: She moved in. Frank Costello: You better get organized, quick. Colin Sullivan: Hey, last time I checked, I tipped you off and you're not in jail. Frank Costello: Are you listening to me? Colin Sullivan: Yeah. Frank Costello: Do you like Little Miss Thing suckin' on your cock? Colin Sullivan: [looks at Madolyn] Yes. Yes, I do. Frank Costello: So earn it. I'm getting the feeling we got a cop in my crew. Colin Sullivan: Yeah, I know. I'm kinda getting that feeling too. Frank Costello: He's one of yours. Inside. Have you seen anything? Colin Sullivan: Frank, I got no access to Queenan's undercover files. He and Dignam run the snitches. I'm doing my best... Frank Costello: Your best? What do you think we're in, the fuckin' haberdashery business? Colin Sullivan: Look, Frank, if you don't relax, if you don't relax, I can't relax. All right? Now what I need you to do is you get me information on the people who were with you last night. Your crew. Get me Social Security numbers, get me... Frank Costello: Get you? Give you? Who the fuck do you work for? What? Colin Sullivan: All right, all right. Frank, Frank, Frank, I'm sorry, Frank. If you could, please. What I need are SS numbers, DOBs, just all the pedigree information so I can run it on my end and we can ID the prick. If you can just get me that information, what I can do is I can just - I - I - we're gonna handle it. I - I - I can handle it. Frank Costello: Colin, calm down, or you'll shoot in your pants. Frank Costello: I'll get you the records and what not. But listen to me, son. Don't disappoint me on this or some other guy will be putting their fat cock up little Miss Freud's ass. [Costello hangs up the phone]
Cool Movie Quote — No. 5 Billy Costigan: [to Frank Costello] You accuse me once, I put up with it. You accuse me twice... I quit. You pressure me to fear for my life and I will put a fucking bullet in your head as if you were anybody else. Okay? [Frank drops something. He reaches under the table and pulls up a gun. He looks at it as if he's never seen it before and then points it at Billy] Frank Costello: You got something you wanna... ask me?
