Danny read the original I Am Legend short novel back in 2001.....this was during my Sci-Fi/Horror book reading phase!
Back then I was reading a lot of Stephen King, Jack Ketchum, Richard Laymon, Peter F. Hamilton, Anne Rice, and Peter Straub!
I Am Legend was published in 1954 by the Great Richard Matheson who is himself a "Legend" among Horror and Sci-Fi readers.
One of Richard Matheson's most famous stories is of a Airline Passenger who thinks he's going insane when he sees a Monster on the Wing of the Plane!
This story was made into one of the most famous Original Twilight Zone episodes ever made.....starring William Shatner as the Airline Passenger.
The reason why I read I Am Legend in the first place was because of what Stephen King said about him:
"Without Richard Matheson I wouldn’t be around."
To Danny, that's was one Hell of an Endorsement.....so when I saw that quote, I went right out and bought I Am Legend.
And the book was Fantastic!
Not because the novel is the action-packed flick that this new Will Smith adaptation turned out to be.....but because the premise of being The Last Human Being on Earth and surrounded by Blood Thirsty Vampires that want to kill you was (and still is) scary as hell to Danny!
In the new I Am Legend adaptation, there is a glimmer of hope that humanity will survive the Worldwide Apocalypse.....but, in the original story, Robert Neville truly is The Last Man on Earth and there is NO HOPE for humanity.
The original novel also was a heavy influence on the future Zombie Movie genre and Worldwide Apocalypse Genre.

This is the Third time that Hollywood as attempted to adapt Richard Matheson's Classic Story into a Full-Length Feature Film.
The first two attempts were:
• The Last Man on Earth — starring Vincent Price (1964)
• The Omega Man — starring Charlton Heston (1971)
While both movies have their own "Flavor" and Unique Perspective, I was never really drawn into the movie version the same way that I was to the original novel.
It's No Secret to Book Enthusiasts, like myself, that.....

When I first heard that a New Film Adaptation of I Am Legend was being made, I was More that a Little Skeptical.
Movie Adaptations of Fictional Classics are usually mediocre at best.
There are a few exceptions where Movie Adaptations are just as good, if not better, than the book!
For Example:
• The Godfather
• Jaws
• Sin City
• Goodfellas
• 300
• Fight Club
• Ben-Hur
• No Country For Old Men
• There Will Be Blood
• A History Of Violence
• The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
But 95% of the time, Hollywood movie adaptations Suck Big Fat Hairy Balls!
I became even more skeptical when I learned that Will Smith would be playing Robert Neville. I wasn't sure if Will Smith had the ability to play a role that was Totally Dependant on Him!
Since I'm familiar with the original story, I knew that whoever Warner Bros choose to play Robert Neville would be totally alone on the screen for a good portion of the movie.
The actor who plays Robert Neville would be the sole focus of the audience.....his performance would make or break I Am Legend.
Hollywood rarely makes movies where the success of the movie rides on one single individual.....especially movies with a $150 Million Budget!
Movie Execs get nervous that their huge investment could be ruined, so they "Hedge" their bets and tweak the story so that it includes more sexy stars, more violence and more sex.
Tom Hanks" Tom Hanks pulled it off when he starred in Cast Away back in 2000. Hanks played a character was was marooned on a deserted island. He was the only human being on the island and he became so lonely that his "Crazy Brain" gave human characteristics.....to a volley ball! |
I was also worried that Will Smith would try to make Robert Neville more comedic and less serious.....which would have ruined the movie.
But Danny has to admit that.....

Danny was definitely shocked at how well Will Smith's performance was in I Am Legend!
YES.....you are NOT Hallucinating! Danny has just admitted that he was WRONG!
Which is a Shocker in and of itself.....cause Danny is almost NEVER WRONG!
Even the one or two instances in I Am Legend where Will Smith is funny came at the proper time in the movie.
It was almost a relief to see Will Smith be a little less serious at times because he's performance is pretty intense throughout the movie.
Even some Robert Neville's weird, little lighted-hearted moments become darker when you realize that Robert Neville isn't trying to be funny.
Robert Neville is starting to lose his mind because he has gone Three Years without a single human being to interact with.
While I myself am a busy guy and I interact with many people everyday.....there are times when I just want to be alone. But sooner or later, I want to interact with people again. Robert Neville doesn't have that option. Every one in the entire city of New York is either dead or transformed into Enraged Mutants! |
Neville is a Military Scientist and he was trying to find a cure to the virus that was wiping out the human race.
So he knows that 90% of the world's population died as a result of the virus.....that's roughly 5.4 Billion People!
That means that 10% of the population survived.....roughly 600 Million People!
But there is a catch! A small percentage of the survivors, including Neville himself, are immune to the virus.....about 12 Million People.
While the rest of the survivors have become Rabid Mutants with Superhuman Strength and Cannibalistic Appetites.....about 588 Million People!
Since Neville is aware of these statistics, he is convinced that there are virtually No Human Beings left alive on Earth.
But even though he is convinced of this, some part of him holds out the slimmest margin of hope that someone is still alive out there.
That's why he spends his days racking his brain to find a cure to the virus AND he sends out AM Radio Broadcasts in the hope that someone will hear his voice and find their way to him.
Since the creatures cannot stand UV Sunlight, they stand hidden in the dark.....this allows Neville to come and go as he pleases during the day time.
All right.
I've just given you the main reason why I Am Legend is worth seeing.....the performance of Will Smith!
Now the Moment you've been waiting for — The next section explains why
I Am Legend is Not That Great of a Movie.
The First Reason is that....

There are a few things that Danny didn't like with this New Movie Version of I Am Legend.
The main problem is the Horrible Atrocious Mediocre Pathetic Special Effects!
Normally in big budget movies, all of the money goes into the Special Effects.....while Quality Acting and Writing are ignored.
But in I Am Legend, the opposite occurs!
Will Smith gives one of the best performances of his career.....he literally carries I Am Legend on his Muscular Shoulders!
By the way, Will Smith is RIPPED in I Am Legend! Whoever Will Smith's personal trainer and nutritionist is, they deserve a Huge Raise! |
But the special effects are Terrible!
The scenes of a destroyed and desolate New York City are very convincing.....I Am Legend did a Fantastic job of showing a Completely Empty NYC!
But the buildings in NYC are Inanimate Objects.
The effects take a Big Downturn when you see the Animated Objects.
The Deer and Lion that Neville Hunts in the City are very phony looking.....but the CGI of the Mutated Creatures were Beyond Awful!
As far as Danny is concerned.....this is Completely Inexcusable!
When I think of how well The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Matrix Trilogy did with their live-action special effects only a few short years ago.....it makes Danny very sad and disappointed to see the lack of skill and effort that resulted in the Disgusting CGI in I Am Legend.
As a matter of fact, the cinematographer for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was hired to work the camera in I Am Legend! |
My guess would be that Warner Bros spent too much money for Will Smith's services, advertising, marketing and other costs.....so they decided to cut costs somewhere else.
So they cut the cost and the quality of the Special Effects.
Another Sci-Fi movie that was distributed by Warner Bros. in 2007 had the same problem — The Invasion.
As a matter of fact, Warner Bros. had been trying to re-make I Am Legend since 1995. Several times the movie was shut down before it ever really got started because of the Large Budget.
At one one point Arnold Schwarzenegger was on board to play Robert Neville before Warner Bros decided to "Pulled The Plug".
Now for the Second Reason why this movie is Not So Great.....
"The Original Novel Is Much Better

Also, many aspects of the book was changed in the movie.....especially the ending!
Now I know that the "formula" for the original book has been copied many times by many different movies.
I'm sure that the Producers of I Am Legend didn't want to be seen as "mimicking" another movie.....especially 28 Days Later!
So I understand why they changed some things around.
There was a chance that the movie writers could come up with a different twist on the story.....it happened in the Movie Adaptation of Fight Club!
But the ending of I Am Legend is Pretty Weak in comparison to the Original Book!
The ending to the Original Book is Bleak, Sad, Dark and Depressing.....there was NO "Dues Ex Machina" (new window) in the book!
However, the ending to this new movie version is too.....Optimistic and Unbelievable!
But it seems to Danny like Warner Bros anticipated that fans of the original book would not be satisfied with the Commercially-Friendly Ending so they've included a Bleaker Alternative Ending onto the Two-Disc Special Edition DVD of I Am Legend.
Also, the movie's explanation of why the title I Am Legend refers to Robert Neville is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from the original book's explanation.
And to be honest.....Danny preferred the book's explanation Much, Much, Much, Much More!
Now for the Third Reason why this movie is Not So Great.....

Another problem I had with the new I Am Legend movie was some of the "Junk Science" that passed for Real Science.
The December 14, 2007 issue of Popular Mechanics (new window) talks about the Plausibility of the Scientific Claims made in I Am Legend.
Now Danny will be the first to admit that he's a little bit of a Nerd.
A "Sexy Nerd" with a deep masculine voice, well-toned muscles, and Pinch-able Butt Cheeks....but a nerd all the same.
Don't Laugh! It's possible for a guy to have a Strong Body and Strong Mind. The Best example Danny can think of is Danny's Idol and Personal Hero — Bruce Lee had the ability to Kick-The-Holy-Hell out of anybody with his "Fists of Death" and his "Brains of Death"! |
Some of the technical stuff in the new I Am Legend movie was very hard to believe.
Sci-Fi movies and stories are supposed to have futuristic stories based on the core foundation of Believable Technology.
Danny doesn't believe that to be the case in I Am Legend.
Particularly with the Electrical Power that Robert Neville utilizes in the movie.
This is where Danny shows his biased nature.....because Danny is a Professional Electrician.
And when I saw that Neville had power to run his laboratory in his basement and his other household gadgets, the first question Danny asked himself was:

Since the question of how Neville got his Electricity wasn't really answered, it distracted Danny somewhat from the movie.
Will Smith swears that the Science in I Am Legend is accurately depicted. Who would you believe.....

• Real Scientists and Engineers — The guys who actually study this stuff for a living?
Sorry, Will Smith.
Just because you play a Scientist in this movie does NOT mean that you are a Real Scientist!

One thing I never wanted to be was one of those guys who Analyzed every single technical aspect of a Sci-Fi movie.....with the sole intent of Finding Mistakes!
Have you have seen Assholes like these?
You can usually find these Sci-Fi Geeks at Comic Book Conventions and Sci-Fi Conventions.
They usually weigh between 300-400 lbs.
They don't have any Hygiene Habits to speak of.....unless you consider having NO Hygiene Habits to be a Hygiene Habit!
They never have the confidence to speak to women because their idea of the Perfect Woman is the Elvish Warrior Princess in their favorite Japanese Anime. (new window)
And even if they ever got near to an Elvish Warrior Princess, they wouldn't have the balls to approach her anyway!
Many of them even go so far as to Dress as their Favorite Japanese Anime characters. It's called Cosplaying (new window) and it's a Sad and Pathetic Hobby!
They live on a diet of Nacho Cheese Doritos, Potato Chips, Butter Cookies, Pizza Hut with the Cheesy Crust, Hot Pockets.....basically any food group that has a Huge Amount of Saturated Fat, Trans Fat, Sodium and Cholesterol.
But they do try to stay healthy by putting some Spinach onto their Double-Stuffed Pizza.....and they wash it all down with DIET Pepsi!
They consider Mr. Spock (new window) from Star Trek to be their GOD and Personal Saviour.....and they think that Mr. Spock deserved to be the Captain of the Enterprise instead of James T. Kirk!
They also have heated arguments on who was the best Captain of the Enterprise: Captain Kirk (new window) or Captain Picard! (new window)
I Shit You Not.....I've actually witnessed fights break out because of this!

It just so happens that a growing number of people are paying attention to the date December 22, 2012 because of a crazy rumor circulating the internet.
The rumor is that the Ancient Mayans "Supposedly" predicted the End of the World on December 22, 2012.
