Danny's Feelings About 3:10 To Yuma:
Time Waits For One Man.

I was very excited to finally see this movie. I miss seeing Real Western Movies on the Big Screen and when I heard that Russell Crowe and Christian Bale were in the remake of 3:10 To Yuma..... Danny said to himself, "This might be Good!" When I found out that the guy who directed Walk the Line and Identity was directing 3:10 To Yuma..... Danny said to himself, "This IS gonna be Good" Then I heard that Russell Crowe was playing the role of Ben Wade, leader of a ruthless gang of robbers and killers.....

Copyright © 2007 Lionsgate, All Rights Reserved Danny said to himself, "Holy Shit, I gotta see this!"
Then I heard that Christian Bale (The New Batman) was playing a family man who has to get the evil Russell Crowe onto that The 3:10 Train to Yuma Prison. At first Danny was happy but then Danny said to himself, "There are Two Non-American's playing American Cowboys.....What's Going On Here?!?" Christian Bale (English) and Russell Crowe (Australian) are the two lead characters in an American Western Movie. I guess America's short on Tough Male Actors to play Tough Male Roles.
Hell, we import everything else.....Why not "American Cowboys" too? Again....I come back to the "Wussification" of the Male Hero in America!
Copyright © 2007 Lions Gate, All Rights ReservedI have nothing against Christian Bale and Russell Crowe....they're two of the Best Male Actors working today. It's just that I haven't seen a good new American Western Movie in a long time....and finally when a good one comes out, I find out that NO American Males were tough enough to win the Lead Roles. I've come to understand the Personalities and Work Ethic of Christian Bale and Russell Crowe....and these guys are Tough! Danny was reminded about this again when I found out that the last half of 3:10 to Yuma was filmed in Santa Fe, New Mexico.....during a Winter Blizzard that dumped over three feet of snow and the temperature came down to almost zero degrees. When you watch the last half of 3:10 to Yuma and see Bale and Crowe talk with each other, you'll see steam coming out of there mouths. That's because they were filming those scenes At Night in the middle of Winter.....with nothing on but there Un-Insulated Cowboy Outfits. There are so many Prima-Donnas in Hollywood who would NEVER do anything like that....Male or Female. I bring that up because I respect these two guys and their dedication to the work that they do.....it's just too bad that Real Toughness hasn't rubbed off on the Pussy Hollywood Version of Toughness. Or maybe Danny is just talking Out of his Ass again cause Danny really misses the Western Movies that he grew up on.....Specifically, the Westerns with Clint Eastwood.

3:10 to Yuma was not what Danny expected at all.
Which is a Good Thing or a Bad Thing depending on who you're talking to.....and that's mostly to do with the behavior of both Dan Evans (Bale) and Ben Wade (Crowe) at the end of the movie. These guys are not playing the stereotypical "Good Guy" and "Bad Guy." Both of them have Likable and Dis-likable Qualities to their Personalities.
We see their Personalities when the action in the movie stops and the characters have a chance to converse with each other.
We see that Ben Wade is a lot more than a Train-robber who Kills innocent people. Ben Wade has an Sensitive Side to go along with his Twisted Side..... Don't worry! 3:10 To Yuma isn't the sequel to Brokeback Mountain! In other words, he's a complex character that can't be easily labeled as a Villain. People who are used to traditional Western Movies might be confused by Ben Wade's actions at the end of the movie....I know I was at first. We see that Dan Evans is a good man trying to support his family....but he's also a man who lacks in Self-confidence and Faith in himself. Because of this, Evans has lost the respect of his sons and his wife.....they've seen him cave in too many times to Stronger Men and they don't feel Secure with him. Dan Evans knows this....so when an opportunity comes up to escort the "Evil" Ben Wade to the 3:10 To Yuma Prison for $200, he grabs that opportunity right away. It's his chance to pay off his creditors who're trying to re-possess his land and a chance to earn the Respect of his family. Copyright © 2007 Lions Gate, All Rights Reserved
Copyright © 2007 Lions Gate, All Rights Reserved While on their trip to catch the 3:10 To Yuma they're constantly being hunted down by Ben Wade's evil posse.... specifically Wade's 2nd in command, Charlie Prince.
Charlie Prince (played by Ben Foster) is a cold-blooded killer who is Totally Loyal to Ben Wade. knows that Wade is the brains and the leader of their gang.....and he goes on a Killing Rampage to get his leader back. I think that Charlie Prince sees himself as Billie the Kid or Jessie James. He Loves being an Outlaw. He has this Twinkle in his eye when he's Killing a Man whose down on his knees, Begging for his Life. Charlie Prince Loves his Job.....he made the Right Career Choice for himself. His Job fulfills him and makes him Happy! We Should All Be So Lucky To Find The Right Career Path For Ourselves! He wears a leather jacket and orange pants.....he's trying to make his own Fashion Statement! He's the Outlaw Calvin Klein! Charlie Prince acts like the Outlaw the National Newspapers portray him to be. Just the way he Dismounts from his Horse and Reloads his Pistols is Original and full of Energy! Charlie Prince drinks Red Bull with his Whiskey! SIDEBARBen Foster nearly steals the movie away from Christian Bale and Russell Crowe.....his Acting is That Good! You Might Recognize Ben Foster....he was a Lunatic in the movie Hostage with Bruce Willis. Ben Foster also played Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand. |
Copyright © 2007 Lions Gate, All Rights ReservedBut a funny thing starts to happen....Dan Evans and Ben Wade start to understand one another and this causes Both of their characters to Slowly Change. Ben Wade starts to act a little more Civilized.....with the exception of throwing one of his escorts off of a Cliff.....I said a Little more Civilized! And Dan Evans starts to act like he was Born with a Pair of Balls after all. You're either going to Love or Hate this movie based on how you Interpret the Ending. I won't give away the ending of 3:10 To Yuma! All I'll say is that the characters do NOT behave they way that older Western Movies teach us how they should behave.....and NO! They don't not build a Gay Sex Tent like those other cowboys did at Brokeback Mountain!

Danny's First Reaction to the Ending was that it was Garbage.....but then I had a change of heart.
I was into the story Completely from beginning to end. It had Danny's Triple-A Seal of Approval: • Great Actors, • Great Acting and • Great Action!!! So I had a hard time Disregarding all of that just because I didn't understand the ending on the First Time Around. So I decided to watch the entire movie a 2nd Time.....and the ending made more sense to Danny!
I'll leave it up to you to decide if it's an Ending that Makes Sense.....or if it's an ending that is Phony Hollywood Bullshit!
Copyright © 2007 Lions Gate, All Rights ReservedIn the commentary track of 3:10 to Yuma, the director is very direct about how good Western Movies are not being made anymore. They aren't being made because they're not Making Money for the studios. I'm so disappointed that so very few good Westerns are being produced. I'm not talking about movies about Historical Events that take place in the West....I file those under Historical Movies. Danny is talking about WESTERNS! Hollywood used to make tons of them with John Wayne and other stars. The director says that studios are confusing Historical Movies that take place in the West.....with Westerns. Movies like Geronimo, Wyatt Earp and Bury My Heart At wounded Knee are HISTORICAL MOVIES based on actual characters and events in the WEST. Traditional Western Movies are about Good vs. Evil with the Stagecoach Chases and the Long Gun Battles.....and with Iconic Larger than Life FICTIONAL Heroes and Villains. 3:10 To Yuma has many of the elements of the Great Western Movies of the Past. Hopefully the Critical and Financial Success of 3:10 To Yuma will help clear up the Confusion and bring more Real Western Movies back to the Big Screen!

Danny's Top 5 Cool Movie Quotes!
Copyright © 2007 Lions Gate, All Rights Reserved Cool Movie Quote — No. 1
Alice Evans: Ben Wade has a gang and they're out there tonight, somewhere. Dan Evans: If I don't go, we gotta pack up and leave. Now I'm tired, Alice. I'm tired of watching my boys go hungry. I'm tired of the way that they look at me. I'm tired of the way that you don't.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 2 Butterfield: Twenty-two robberies. Over four hundred thousand dollars in losses. More in delays. The Southern Pacific will have Ben Wade convicted in a federal court. Hanged in public. An example made. And we will pay to make it happen. Ben Wade: Y'all notice he didn't mention any of the lives I've taken.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 3 Ben Wade: I've always liked you Byron, but you never know when to shut up. Even bad men love their mommas.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 4 Byron McElroy: If you're gonna kill me, just as soon get to it. Ben Wade: I ain't gonna kill you. Not like this. Byron McElroy: Won't change a thing, lettin' me live. I'll come for you. Ben Wade: I'd be disappointed if you didn't.
Cool Movie Quote — No. 5 Ben Wade: They're gonna kill you and your father, William. They're gonna laugh while they do it. I think you know that. William Evans: Call 'em off. Ben Wade: Why should I? William Evans: Because you're not all bad. Ben Wade: Yes, I am. William Evans: You saved us from those Indians. Ben Wade: I saved myself. William Evans: You got us through the trunnels. You helped us get away. Ben Wade: If I had a gun in them tunnels, I would have used it on you. William Evans: I don't believe you. Ben Wade: Kid, I wouldn't last five minutes leading an outfit like that if I wasn't as rotten as hell.
